To add fonts to Adobe Premiere (formerly Premiere Pro), install the font file in Windows or macOS, or add the family through Adobe Fonts. Then select the title or caption text and choose the family and style in Properties. Making a font available and applying it to existing text are separate steps.

I leave the final font choice until picture timing, sound and color are settled. A different typeface can change line breaks and the space a title needs. For [words on screen](https://premiereproclub.com/tag/captions/), check the next cut as well as the current frame. If you trim the picture later, revisit caption timing and title duration before delivery.

## Install a font file on Windows or Mac

Start with a font you have permission to use in the video. Check the foundry's terms for your intended distribution: [locally installed fonts have their own license agreements](https://helpx.adobe.com/fonts/using/font-licensing.html?ref=premiereproclub.com), so Adobe Fonts permissions don't automatically cover a separate download.

Premiere needs the font to be [installed on the computer or added through Adobe Fonts](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/add-text-images/stylize-text/replace-fonts.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). For a downloaded font, use the operating system's installation route:

- **Windows:** extract the ZIP if the download is compressed, then find the actual `.ttf` or `.otf` file. Microsoft’s Windows instructions say to [right-click the font file and choose Install](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/experience/personalization/manage-fonts-in-windows?ref=premiereproclub.com). Selecting the ZIP itself doesn't complete that procedure.
- **Mac:** [double-click the font file in Finder and click Install](https://support.apple.com/guide/font-book/install-and-validate-fonts-fntbk1000/mac?ref=premiereproclub.com) in the dialog. Font Book checks the font for errors and duplicates during installation. If it reports a problem, resolve that installation issue before looking for the font in Premiere.

Check the styles supplied with the family, too. If the title needs a particular weight or italic, make sure that style is available before returning to the edit. A family name alone won't tell the next editor which style the design uses.

## Add an Adobe Fonts family

Use this route when the typeface is in the Adobe Fonts library. [Adobe Fonts adds desktop fonts through Creative Cloud](https://helpx.adobe.com/fonts/using/activate-fonts-desktop.html?ref=premiereproclub.com); you don't download and pass around its font files as part of the project.

To add fonts, you need [an internet connection and a signed-in Creative Cloud desktop app](https://helpx.adobe.com/fonts/web/getting-and-using-fonts/resolve-missing-fonts.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). The sign-in has to be [a named-user Adobe subscription](https://helpx.adobe.com/fonts/web/introduction/system-subscription-requirements.html?ref=premiereproclub.com): a device or site-wide license, common on shared lab machines, can't add fonts. Then:

1. Open the Adobe Fonts website and browse or search for the family you want.
2. Open its family page. Choose the weights and styles you need, then use the Add option. You can also add the full family from the menu above the styles.
3. In Creative Cloud desktop, click the **f** menu icon in the upper-right corner and check that the fonts are listed as added.
4. Return to Premiere and look for the family alongside your locally installed fonts. Choose its style when you apply it to the selected text.

Use Add Family on the family page, or add only the styles you need. Check the added-font list in Creative Cloud before returning to Premiere. [Open Adobe Fonts family controls at full size](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/owner130-cdb886f5beb5-adobe-fonts-add-family.webp?ref=premiereproclub.com).

Adobe's current help calls this step adding fonts. Older tutorials call it activation and show an Activate Fonts toggle, so don't go looking for that switch on the current family page. If the family is added but absent from Premiere's menu, work through the checks below before choosing a substitute.

## Apply the font to a title or captions

In Premiere 25.0 and later, [Properties handles editing functions that older tutorials show in Essential Graphics](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/add-text-images/stylize-text/about-properties-panel.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). Font installation supplies the typeface; the selected title or caption determines the text you change.

A simple example sequence, read from top to bottom, has a caption track above V2 titles and V1 picture, with A1 dialogue and A2 music below. Select the text you intend to style before changing its font. The picture clip underneath a title isn't the title itself.

### For an existing title

1. Open the sequence and park the playhead where the title is visible.
2. [Right-click the title in the Program Monitor and choose Edit Properties](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/add-text-images/stylize-text/create-titles.html?ref=premiereproclub.com).
3. With the intended text selected, choose the font family and style in Properties. Check the words in the Program Monitor, including any lines near the edge of the title area.

![Text controls in Properties with the Myriad Pro family field above the Regular style menu](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/owner130-4caa5e1fda1a-properties-family-style.webp)

The family and style are separate choices. Check the selected text in the Program Monitor after choosing both. [Open Properties family and style controls at full size](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/owner130-4caa5e1fda1a-properties-family-style.webp?ref=premiereproclub.com).

If you haven't made a title yet, [add text](https://premiereproclub.com/add-text-premiere-pro/) first, then return to its font controls. Installing another family won't create a title clip for you.

### For captions already in the sequence

[Select the caption text in the timeline and style it in Properties](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/add-text-images/insert-captions/create-styles-for-captions.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). To change several segments, select the segments you mean to change and use their shared font properties. Check the selection before applying the change; a change to selected segments doesn't establish that the rest of the track now matches.

For a consistent caption design, a [caption track style can include the font and font size](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/add-text-images/stylize-text/parameters-when-applying-as-linked-style-or-track-style.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). Changing one selected caption and changing a track style have different scopes. After styling, play across the next cut and watch for an awkward line break or text that covers an important part of the new shot.

## If the font still doesn't appear

Check the exact family and style's availability on this computer before redesigning the title. Once installation or addition is confirmed, check whether Premiere's menu has updated.

1. **Confirm the addition finished.** For a local download, check that you installed the font file. For Adobe Fonts, check the added-font list in Creative Cloud desktop.
2. **Search by family and check the style.** Adobe explains that [font names and family grouping can differ between applications](https://helpx.adobe.com/fonts/web/getting-and-using-fonts/fonts-not-showing-in-the-menu.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). The download's filename may not be the name you should search for. Look inside the family for the weight or italic you need.
3. **Check Creative Cloud access.** If you're adding an Adobe font, confirm that the desktop app is signed in and the computer is online. Recheck the family and selected styles on the Adobe Fonts page.
4. **Save the project and restart Premiere if the list remains stale.** Adobe notes that some applications need a restart to update their font menus. Reopen the project and check the same family and style again.

A restart is a response to a menu that hasn't updated, rather than a required extra step after every font addition. If only one weight is missing, check that weight's installation or added status before replacing the whole family.

## Resolve fonts in a shared project or MOGRT

For a shared edit, I'd keep the exact family and style when licensed access is available: a substitute may change the title's layout. Ask the sender for both names and where the font came from.

Search Adobe Fonts for a missing family. If it isn't available there, Adobe directs users to [the font foundry or an authorized reseller](https://helpx.adobe.com/fonts/web/getting-and-using-fonts/resolve-missing-fonts.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). Each editing computer needs the appropriate font access; sending the project isn't a license transfer.

A finished video and an editable project have different font-access requirements. [Adobe Fonts permits film and video use](https://helpx.adobe.com/fonts/using/font-licensing.html?ref=premiereproclub.com), including commercial exhibition, broadcast and online distribution. An editor who needs to access those fonts directly needs their own license. Adobe also says its fonts don't work with packaging workflows that transfer font files to another user or computer, so don't copy them into the project folder. Share the family and style names and a route to licensed access with the project.

When you do have to substitute, swap the font across the project at once rather than title by title: choose [Graphics and Titles > Replace Fonts in Project](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/add-text-images/stylize-text/replace-fonts.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). Install or add the replacement font first. The dialog lists the fonts the project uses; select the one to replace, pick the new family from the **Replacement Font** menu, then select **OK**. Afterward, check captions and any template clips on their own; don't assume the swap reached every text element in a template.

![Replace Fonts in Project dialog with Museo Sans 500 selected among the project fonts, Minion Pro Regular in the Replacement Font menu and the OK button, marked 1 to 3](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/a25-replace-fonts-dialog.webp)

Select the font to replace, choose its substitute in Replacement Font, then OK. Play through every title that used the old font, because a new typeface can change line breaks. [Open the Replace Fonts in Project dialog at full size](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/a25-replace-fonts-dialog.webp?ref=premiereproclub.com).

### When a template has no font control

For a [Motion Graphics template](https://premiereproclub.com/import-mogrt-premiere-pro/) already in the sequence, Adobe places its [appearance controls in the Edit tab of Properties](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/add-text-images/use-motion-graphics-templates/add-motion-graphic-templates-to-a-sequence.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). Select the template clip and inspect the controls it provides.

An After Effects template author can [expose font family and style controls](https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/desktop/motion-graphics/work-with-motion-graphics-templates/creating-motion-graphics-templates.html?ref=premiereproclub.com), but those controls aren't available in every template. Adding another font won't create a missing control. Ask the author for a version that exposes the controls, or choose a template you can edit as needed.

## Check the words across the cut

Park the playhead a little before a title or caption appears and play through the next edit point. Read the whole line at playback speed. Check wrapping and placement against both shots, then check the next title that uses the same family. If picture timing has changed, revisit where the text begins and ends.

Once the font and layout hold through a clean pass of the sequence, carry the same readable style through the remaining captions.
