- Description: Read the missing file path, locate one known source and relink the matching set. Separate moved files, renamed clips, proxy pairs and cloud downloads before changing the edit.

Select the offline clips in the Project panel, choose **File > Link Media**, and use **Locate** to reconnect the correct source file. If the footage lives on an external drive, connect that drive first. I'd start with one file whose identity is certain: automatic relinking can then find its neighbours, while a wrong match can replace that clip everywhere it appears in the project.

The red Media Offline frame means Premiere can't reach the linked source. Your timeline placements, In and Out points and effects can remain in the project even while the pictures are missing. [Relinking reconnects those offline clips](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/organize-media/ingest-proxy-workflow/relink-offline-clips.html?ref=premiereproclub.com); rebuilding the edit is usually the wrong first move.

## Find the source before changing the project

Open the media location in Finder or File Explorer. Check that the drive is mounted and that the actual video or audio file is there. A familiar folder name isn't enough if the folder contains only cloud placeholders or a different camera card with repeated filenames.

For OneDrive on Windows, right-click the needed files or folder and choose [**Always keep on this device**](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/save-disk-space-with-onedrive-files-on-demand-for-windows-0e6860d3-d9f3-4971-b321-7092438fb38e?ref=premiereproclub.com). For iCloud Drive on macOS, Control-click and choose [**Download Now**, or **Keep Downloaded**](https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/work-with-folders-and-files-in-icloud-drive-mchl1a02d711/mac?ref=premiereproclub.com) for files that need to stay on the Mac. Let the download finish, then return to Link Media.

Save a project copy before changing a large set of links. **File > Save a Copy** uses **Option + Command + S** on macOS or **Ctrl + Alt + S** on Windows in the [default keyboard layout](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/get-started/keyboard-shortcuts/default-keyboard-shortcuts.html?ref=premiereproclub.com); custom shortcuts can differ.

A file playing in a system player proves that you have a playable file there, but it doesn't establish Premiere's ability to decode it. If the file is present and relinking produces an import or format error, follow that error separately: [a container such as MOV can hold different codecs](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/troubleshooting/playback-issues/troubleshoot-sequence-and-file-interpretation-settings.html?ref=premiereproclub.com).

## Relink one known file, then the matching set

The Link Media dialog distinguishes the clip name used in the project from the source filename and its old folder path. Read the filename and path together. A clip renamed in a bin may still point to an original camera filename.

1. In the Project panel, select one or more offline clips. Choose **File > Link Media**. You can also right-click an offline clip and choose **Link Media**.
2. Inspect the missing filename and old folder path. If the drive or folder moved, identify its new location before searching.
3. Under **Match File Properties**, select properties that uniquely identify the source. For unchanged files moved together, **File Name** and **File Extension** are useful only if that combination is unique.
4. Keep **Relink others automatically** selected when the other selected clips belong to the same known set and retain their matching properties.
5. Select the first missing clip, choose **Locate**, and navigate to the correct source. In Locate File, **Last Path** shows where Premiere previously found it.
6. Confirm the file, then choose **Select**. Premiere attempts to reconnect other matching clips; keeping the old relative folder structure helps.
7. Return to the sequence. Park the playhead just before an affected edit point and play across it. Check the outgoing shot, incoming shot and lip sync, then inspect other uses of the relinked source.

Adobe requires [at least one matching property, and a combination that uniquely identifies each file](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/organize-media/file-organization/locate-and-link-offline-files.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). Camera filenames reused on different cards need more care than one folder of uniquely named interview clips. Keep the card folders separate and verify the exact source before letting the rest relink.

Use the checked properties only when they identify the right file. Locate one known source before accepting the rest of the relinked set.

[Relinking to a different source replaces the offline clip throughout the project](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/organize-media/ingest-proxy-workflow/relink-offline-clips.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). If the picture is wrong after relinking, return to the saved copy and establish which file belongs to that clip before continuing.

## Handle renamed, duplicate or missing files deliberately

| What changed | What to do |
| ---------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| The folder or drive moved; filenames stayed the same | Locate one correct source in the new location, then let matching clips relink. Preserve their relative folder structure. |
| The source file was renamed | Choose matching metadata that still identifies it, then locate it manually. A changed File Name can't remain a required match. |
| Different cards contain the same filename | Check the card folder and source identity. Use distinguishing metadata only when it is present and reliable; don't accept the first same-name result. |
| The source was transcoded to another extension | Adobe says clearing File Extension can permit the new format to link. Confirm that the replacement is the intended source before accepting it. |
| The source was deleted | Find the correct backup or another valid copy. A project file or cache file doesn't recreate the missing original. |

[Renames, changed formats, a different folder tree and unmounted drives can require manual relinking](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/organize-media/file-organization/relink-offline-media-automatically.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). For a renamed file, **Media Start** or **Tape Name** may help only if the actual metadata distinguishes it from the alternatives.

When the search doesn't show the expected file, inspect the Locate File filters, including **Display Only Exact Name Matches**. Adobe's [manual relink workflow](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/organize-media/file-organization/manually-locate-and-relink-offline-media.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) also lets you edit the path and search from the old location. To use Finder or File Explorer instead of Premiere's browser, deselect **Use Media Browser to locate files** in Link Media.

Don't use **Make Offline** as a repair for a file that's already missing. Its [**Media Files Are Deleted** option removes source files from disk](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/organize-media/ingest-proxy-workflow/convert-online-clips-to-offline-clips.html?ref=premiereproclub.com); **Media Files Remain On Disk** is a different choice. Clearing the media cache won't restore a deleted source either: the cache holds [accelerator files such as peaks and conformed audio](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/troubleshooting/media-issues/manage-media-cache.html?ref=premiereproclub.com).

## Repair the missing side of a proxy pair

Check whether the missing file is the camera original or its editing proxy. Those are separate links, so reconnect the side that moved.

For a missing original attached to a proxy workflow, select the clips in the Project panel and use [**Proxy > Reconnect Full Resolution Media**](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/organize-media/ingest-proxy-workflow/reconnect-full-resolution-media-to-proxies.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). Set the identifying properties, choose **Attach**, locate the correct full-resolution source and confirm it.

For a missing or moved proxy, right-click the source clips and choose [**Proxy > Attach Proxies**](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/organize-media/ingest-proxy-workflow/attach-proxies-to-full-resolution-media.html?ref=premiereproclub.com), then attach the correct proxy. These documented workflows support video-only and audio/video clips; they don't cover audio-only files, still images or image sequences.

Before delivery, reconnect the originals and inspect the [export choices](https://premiereproclub.com/render-export-premiere-pro/). Premiere [exports from full-resolution media by default even when proxies are enabled](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/organize-media/ingest-proxy-workflow/export-proxies.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). **Use Proxies** is an explicit export option; a working proxy preview alone isn't a sufficient check of the intended delivery source.

## Find every remaining offline item

On versions with Sequence Index, open **Window > Sequence Index**, choose its filter icon and select offline media. The [searchable sequence table can also export a CSV](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/organize-media/file-organization/navigate-timelines-with-sequence-index.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) of its results. Use the list to work through remaining gaps, rather than relying on the first frame of the sequence.

[![Lower Sequence Index Options controls with Offline Media checked and the OK button highlighted](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/a09-1c90a310e156-v3-sequence-index.webp)](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/a09-1c90a310e156-v3-sequence-index.webp?ref=premiereproclub.com)

Select Offline Media in Sequence Index Options, then confirm with OK to show unavailable sources in the current sequence's index.

[Open the full-size Sequence Index filter controls](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/a09-1c90a310e156-v3-sequence-index.webp?ref=premiereproclub.com)

To locate a source clip from an affected timeline item, right-click on Windows or Control-click on macOS and choose [**Reveal In Project**](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/edit-projects/change-clip-sequence/find-clips-in-a-sequence.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). Reconnect it there, then play across the affected cut. Repeat for other sequences that use that source before starting the final export.

## Move the project and media as a unit next time

Keep an ordinary project and its media under a common parent folder. Premiere first searches the project folder and its subfolders, then searches one level up, including adjacent folders. That [two-pass search and common-root matching](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/organize-media/file-organization/relink-offline-media-automatically.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) also support moving between macOS and Windows when the folder structure stays consistent.

[![Interview project parent folder containing 01_Project with Interview.prproj and adjacent 02_Media with Camera, Audio, Graphics and Proxies folders](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/a09-600df6c3c122-owner130-two-pass-folder.webp)](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/a09-600df6c3c122-owner130-two-pass-folder.webp?ref=premiereproclub.com)

Keep 01\_Project and 02\_Media together inside the parent folder. The first search covers the project folder; the second reaches its neighbour.

[Open the full-size project folder map](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/a09-600df6c3c122-owner130-two-pass-folder.webp?ref=premiereproclub.com)

For a [handoff containing the selected sequences' media](https://premiereproclub.com/package-premiere-pro-project/), use [**File > Project Manager > Collect Files and Copy to New Location**](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/organize-media/create-projects/copy-project.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). Choose the needed sequences and destination; **Exclude Unused Clips** limits the collection to used media. Check the copied project before handing it over.

Productions has a separate storage rule: [keep media outside the production folder containing the .prodset file and its subfolders](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/organize-media/file-organization/relink-offline-media-automatically.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). On shared Windows storage, use the same mapped drive letter on each workstation. Once the links are repaired, play the sequence through the previously affected edits and confirm that every needed source is available for delivery.
