- Description: Adobe Premiere's desktop app gets one seven-day trial that bills on Day 8. Here's what to set up before checkout, how to cancel in time, what each plan costs afterward, and the free phone and desktop alternatives.

[Adobe Premiere (formerly Premiere Pro)](https://premiereproclub.com/what-is-premiere-pro/) isn't free on a computer. You get one [seven-day trial of the full desktop app](https://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/free-trial-download.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) for Windows or macOS, and it turns into a paid membership unless you cancel before it ends. The Premiere phone apps for iPhone and Android are free. To keep editing on a desktop without paying, switch to DaVinci Resolve's free edition or Kdenlive.

My advice is to hold off on the trial until the footage is on your drive and the coming week has real editing time in it. The clock starts at checkout, not when you first open the app, and Adobe allows one trial per person.

## Three free routes and where each one stops

| Route | What you get free | Where it stops |
| -------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Desktop trial | The full current app on Windows or macOS for seven days | Billing begins on Day 8 unless you cancel first |
| Premiere on iPhone or Android | The editing essentials in a free phone app | Extra generative credits and storage are paid upgrades |
| Resolve free edition or Kdenlive | A desktop editor that stays free | It's a different program, with its own interface and project files |

If you edit alone and shoot on your phone, I'd start with the free app and skip the trial clock entirely. Take the desktop trial when you need to judge Premiere itself on a real project, or when the person taking over the edit works in Premiere. For a desktop project that will run for months on no budget, go straight to a free desktop editor instead of racing a seven-day deadline.

## Before you start the seven-day clock

Adobe's trial FAQ is exact about timing: the trial starts when you check out and lasts seven days. Installing a day later or leaving the app closed doesn't save any of them. Expect to enter a payment method too, since [Adobe asks for payment details up front](https://photutorial.com/premiere-pro-free-trial/?ref=premiereproclub.com) and doesn't charge until the trial ends.

1. **Check the computer.** Compare your machine with [Adobe's system requirements](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/system-requirements.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). The [minimum specs are scoped to HD editing](https://premiereproclub.com/premiere-pro-system-requirements/); the recommended ones cover HD, 4K and higher.
2. **Gather one small project.** Copy the camera files, music and graphics for a few minutes of video you need to finish into one folder.
3. **Start from Adobe's trial page.** Click **Free Trial**, choose a plan, then sign in or create an Adobe account and follow the checkout steps. Before you confirm, read the plan, the billing option and the first charge date that checkout shows. If an Adobe Stock trial is offered alongside, it's a separate subscription with its own renewal, and Premiere doesn't need it.
4. **Write down the end date.** Set a reminder for Day 6, so a cancellation has a full day to spare.
5. **Download and install Premiere.** Then open your project folder and start cutting.

![Trial calendar on one line: Day 1 checkout starts the free trial, Day 7 is the last day to cancel free, billing begins on Day 8, and the refund window ends on Day 21.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/premiere-pro-free-trial-timeline.webp)

The free week ends after Day 7; Days 8 to 21 are paid days you can still get refunded. [Open the full-size trial calendar](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/premiere-pro-free-trial-timeline.webp?ref=premiereproclub.com).

Spend the week on one small, complete edit rather than a tour of tutorials. Cut a few minutes of your own footage, [split and trim the clips](https://premiereproclub.com/split-clip-premiere-pro/), [even out the color between shots](https://premiereproclub.com/color-correction-premiere-pro/), [lay music under the dialogue](https://premiereproclub.com/add-music-premiere-pro/) and export. By Day 6 you'll know whether the timeline suits the way you work, and that's the decision the trial exists for.

## What the trial turns into on Day 8

Unless you cancel, the trial converts to a paid single-app membership with the billing option you picked at checkout. That choice doesn't change the seven days. It sets the price from Day 8 and what leaving costs later. On the US [Premiere plans page](https://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/plans.html?ref=premiereproclub.com), the annual plan billed monthly is US$22.99 a month, month to month is US$34.49, and a prepaid year is US$263.88\. Both annual options cost you something if you stop after the first 14 days; month to month doesn't.

If the trial convinces you and you'll edit most weeks of the year, the [annual plan billed monthly](https://premiereproclub.com/premiere-pro-price/) is my default. For one client job with a fixed end date, I'd pick month to month at checkout, because stopping it later costs nothing beyond the current month. These are US card rates before tax. Under Adobe's [US subscription terms](https://www.adobe.com/legal/subscription-terms.html?ref=premiereproclub.com), the annual plan billed monthly renews month by month after the first year at the then-current rate, and a price change has to come with notice and the option to cancel. With no notice, I'd budget the same US$22.99 for year two.

![Three billing options after the trial: annual billed monthly at US$22.99 a month with a fee if cancelled after 14 days, month to month at US$34.49 with no cancellation fee, and annual prepaid at US$263.88 a year with no refund after 14 days.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/premiere-pro-free-trial-plans.webp)

The billing option you pick at checkout sets the price after Day 8 and what it costs to leave. [Open the full-size plan comparison](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/premiere-pro-free-trial-plans.webp?ref=premiereproclub.com).

What's the cheapest way to get Premiere? For the app alone, it's the prepaid year at US$21.99 a month in effect, provided you're sure about the full twelve months. Single-app plans carry no student discount. Eligible students and teachers can instead get Creative Cloud Pro, which includes Premiere, for US$19.99 a month in the first year and US$39.99 after that. If the honest answer is "I don't want to pay at all," the free routes further down are cheaper still.

## Cancel before Day 8 if Premiere isn't for you

To skip the first charge, cancel inside the seven days. For a trial bought directly from Adobe, Adobe's [cancellation guide](https://helpx.adobe.com/manage-account/using/cancel-subscription.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) runs like this:

1. Sign in to your Adobe account with the email you used at checkout.
2. Go to **Plans and payment > Manage plan** for the Premiere plan.
3. Choose **Cancel your plan**, pick a reason, select **Continue** and follow the remaining screens.
4. Check for the confirmation email, or look at the plan's status on the account page.

Each plan cancels separately, so end any extra trial you started at the same checkout. A plan bought through Apple, Google or Microsoft cancels through that store instead. Adobe won't let you cancel while a payment is processing or failing and asks you to wait 24 hours, which is one more reason not to leave it to the last evening.

![Cancellation path in five steps: Adobe account, Plans and payment, Manage plan, Cancel your plan, then the confirmation email, with a note that each plan cancels separately.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/premiere-pro-free-trial-cancel.webp)

Cancelling inside the seven days stops the first charge; check the confirmation email before you stop editing. [Open the full-size cancellation path](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/premiere-pro-free-trial-cancel.webp?ref=premiereproclub.com).

Is there a 30-day free trial? No. The trial is seven days. Adobe's trial page adds an extra 14 days to cancel for a full refund, so its calendar runs to Day 21, but billing begins on Day 8\. Those two weeks are paid days with a refund option, not more free editing.

## The free Premiere phone apps

The phone apps are the free part of Premiere. Adobe's [iPhone launch post](https://blog.adobe.com/en/publish/2025/09/30/now-available-adobe-premiere-iphone-brings-pro-quality-video-editing-creators?ref=premiereproclub.com) describes the editing essentials at no cost, with paid upgrades for extra generative credits and storage. The [Android app](https://blog.adobe.com/en/publish/2026/09/22/adobe-premiere-expands-android-fast-powerful-easy-mobile-video-editing?ref=premiereproclub.com) follows the same model and exports up to 4K without a forced login, ads or a watermark.

The handoff to a computer is where they differ. The iPhone app can send work to desktop Premiere for finer editing; on Android, continued editing on desktop is still listed as coming soon. Either way, finishing on a computer needs the desktop app, which means the trial or a membership. The seven-day trial is desktop only and doesn't cover the phone apps, and a free phone app doesn't include desktop Premiere.

Is Premiere Pro shutting down? No. On [November 19, 2025](https://blog.adobe.com/en/publish/2025/11/19/adobe-premiere-adds-smarter-search-faster-edits-seamless-collaboration?ref=premiereproclub.com), Adobe dropped "Pro" and made Premiere the name of a family of apps on desktop and mobile. Tutorials that still say Premiere Pro mean the same desktop editor.

## Free desktop editors for after the trial

When the project will outlast seven days and the budget is zero, switch editors rather than hunting for another trial. Here's how I'd choose between the two strongest free options.

### DaVinci Resolve, free edition

Blackmagic's [DaVinci Resolve 21](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve?ref=premiereproclub.com) has a free edition for Mac, Windows and Linux that works with virtually all 8-bit video formats at up to 60fps and Ultra HD 3840 x 2160\. The paid Studio edition adds the DaVinci AI Neural Engine, more Resolve FX, temporal and AI spatial noise reduction, text-based editing, Magic Mask, and 10-bit video up to 120fps beyond 4K. I'd [pick Resolve when color work matters](https://premiereproclub.com/davinci-resolve-vs-premiere-pro/) and your footage fits the free edition's limits. If your camera records 10-bit or high-frame-rate video, open a few of those clips in the free edition before you commit a project to it.

### Kdenlive

[Kdenlive](https://kdenlive.org/?ref=premiereproclub.com) is free and open source, for Linux, Windows, macOS and BSD. It offers multicam and three-point editing, nested sequences, automatic backups, a histogram, vectorscope, RGB parade and waveform, and subtitles from automatic transcription. I'd pick it for long talking-head or tutorial projects, where captions and backups matter more than advanced grading.

Either one is a different program, so agree on it with anyone who'll take the project over before you build the whole cut.

Don't reach for a cracked installer to stretch the trial. Adobe's [genuine software page](https://www.adobe.com/genuine.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) warns that unlicensed copies could expose you to a high chance of malware or viruses in the installation files, no support or updates, crashes, and loss of work and files, and that Adobe may disable the unlicensed app. A free editor from its own developer is the safer way to finish the project.

## Before the trial or membership ends

Export what you need while the app still works. Once access ends, [most paid Creative Cloud apps stop working](https://helpx.adobe.com/account/individual/terms-policies-and-regulations/adobe-subscription-terms.html?ref=premiereproclub.com); a free account keeps 5GB of cloud storage, and Adobe gives you 30 days to move files above that. Keep the project file, the original media and the export in one folder structure, so reopening the project later doesn't greet you with [media offline](https://premiereproclub.com/media-offline-premiere-pro/) clips.

Then open the export in the player or on the phone where it'll be watched, play it to the end and listen for the sound staying in sync with the picture.
