To trim video in Adobe Premiere (formerly Premiere Pro) without leaving a gap, select the [Ripple Edit tool](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/edit-projects/trim-clips/perform-ripple-edits.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) with **B** on macOS or Windows, then drag the clip's edge. Following clips shift as the sequence gets shorter or longer, so decide which other tracks should follow before you trim. Use the [Rolling Edit tool](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/edit-projects/trim-clips/perform-rolling-edits.html?ref=premiereproclub.com), **N** on either platform, when you want to move the shared cut while keeping the two clips' combined duration.

I'd use ripple while tightening the rough cut because closing the space is part of that edit. Once a title or music cue needs to stay at its time, check its track before changing the sequence length. A clean V1 cut can still shift the sound or make a title arrive early.

## Set the tracks before the first ripple

For an interview example, read the track stack from top to bottom: **V2 title, V1 interview; A1 interview dialogue, A2 music**. Decide whether the title and music should follow the interview as its length changes.

The [Sync Lock toggle](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/edit-projects/change-clip-sequence/sync-lock-to-prevent-changes.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) in each track header decides which other tracks shift with a ripple trim. The track directly involved in the edit shifts regardless of its own Sync Lock state, so turning that icon off on the track you're trimming won't freeze the edit.

For a track you intend to protect from editing, use [Toggle Track Lock](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/edit-projects/intro-to-editing/work-with-clips-on-the-timeline-using-track-targeting.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). Holding the music in place is a timing choice: the shorter interview may now land against a different part of the song. After the trim, listen at the cut and check the title's entrance.

The violet column contains Sync Lock. The padlock is Track Lock; the V1 and A1 targeting buttons sit between them. ## Ordinary trimming leaves space; ripple closes it

An ordinary non-ripple trim changes the clip's edge without bringing the next clip into that space. Shorten a clip that touches its neighbor and you can leave a gap. The [standard-trim and ripple example in LinkedIn Learning](https://www.linkedin.com/learning/premiere-pro-2025-essential-training/trimming-shot-length-using-ripple-trims?ref=premiereproclub.com) shows that difference directly: shortening with a standard trim leaves space, then switching to Ripple Edit brings the following clips in.

For an ordinary trim, switch to the Selection tool and select the clip in the Timeline panel. [Hover over its edge until the Trim icon appears](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/edit-projects/trim-clips/trim-a-clip.html?ref=premiereproclub.com), then drag the edge to the frame you want. Work at the edge, where you're changing the clip's start or end, rather than grabbing its middle to reposition it.

For a paired picture-and-sound trim, check that both linked edges are selected. Holding **Alt** on Windows or **Option** on macOS can [trim only one track of a linked clip](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/edit-projects/trim-clips/perform-rolling-edits.html?ref=premiereproclub.com), so use that modifier only when you intend a split edit.

Check the tool at the pointer before dragging. The preference [Allow Selection tool to choose Roll and Ripple trims without modifier key](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/get-started/preferences-and-settings/trim-preferences.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) allows those operations with the Selection tool when enabled. An older tutorial's unmodified drag may therefore perform a different operation from the one you're expecting.

Keep an ordinary trim when the empty space is intentional or when you're adjusting an edge into an existing gap. To shorten a connected run of clips and close the removed time, use Ripple Edit:

1. Inspect the video and audio edges you're about to trim, then check Sync Lock and Track Lock on the other tracks.
2. Press **B** on macOS or Windows to select Ripple Edit.
3. Drag the clip's end left to shorten it or right to lengthen it. Watch the following clips and the sequence duration as you drag.
4. Release the edge, park the playhead a little before the cut, and play through it. Listen for a clipped word and look for an empty frame or an unintended shift on another track.

Two keys [ripple-trim straight to the playhead](https://larryjordan.com/articles/almost-20-little-known-keyboard-shortcuts-for-adobe-premiere-pro/?ref=premiereproclub.com). Park the playhead on the frame where the cut should fall, then press Q to remove everything from the previous edit up to the playhead, or W to remove everything from the playhead to the next edit. The following clips close up either way, and the keys are the same on macOS and Windows.

In a six-frame example, a ripple trim shortens the run by six frames. An ordinary non-ripple trim leaves a six-frame space before the next clip. Keep that pause if it belongs in the edit. If it doesn't, [select the gap and press Delete](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/edit-projects/intro-to-editing/edit-video-in-premiere.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) to close it.

Sequence markers have a separate setting: [Markers > Ripple Sequence Markers](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/edit-projects/trim-clips/perform-ripple-edits.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). Turn it on to move sequence markers with ripple edits; turn it off to keep them at their original time positions during ripple trims. Check a marker tied to a music cue after shortening the sequence.

If you're trimming material from the middle of a shot, first [split a clip](https://premiereproclub.com/split-clip-premiere-pro/) at the boundaries you need. Edge trimming then gives you control over the resulting pieces.

## Roll the cut when the sequence length is settled

A rolling edit changes the handoff between two neighboring clips. One gets shorter as the other gets longer by the same amount, so their combined duration stays fixed. I'd choose it when the next scene already lands on the right beat and only the cut between these two shots feels early or late.

1. Select the edit between the two clips you want to adjust.
2. Press **N** on macOS or Windows to select Rolling Edit.
3. Drag the shared edit point left or right. Watch both sides of the cut, since you're changing the last frame of one shot and the first frame of the next.

If the roll stops with a media-limit message, inspect the source footage at the edge you're trying to extend. In an [Adobe Community answer about a rolling-edit media limit](https://community.adobe.com/questions-729/rolling-edit-tool-trim-media-limit-reached-on-footage-1-1366631?ref=premiereproclub.com), Community Expert Ann Bens identified missing handles, or extra footage beyond the selected edge, as the cause in that case. Choose a cut supported by the footage available around that edge.

Play from just before the cut. Check the outgoing action and the incoming action together: the total length can be right while a gesture jumps between shots. Then glance farther down the sequence to confirm the timing you meant to preserve.

## Slip changes the content; slide changes its position

Use [Slip](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/edit-projects/trim-clips/perform-slip-edits.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) when a clip already occupies the right amount of time but shows the wrong part of the source shot. Select it, press **Y** on macOS or Windows, and drag over the clip. Its source In and Out points move by the same amount while its duration and position in the timeline stay fixed.

A slip needs [source footage beyond the current In or Out point](https://schoolofmotion.com/blog/top-five-tools-fast-video-editing-premiere-pro?ref=premiereproclub.com) in the direction of the adjustment, as Jake Bartlett's School of Motion explanation notes. Choose a later moment in a long take, for example, while keeping the slot already cut to the music. Play through both ends afterward; a better opening frame can come with an ending you don't want.

![Slip advances the selected source window from frames C–F to D–G while the linked timeline slot stays fixed](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/owner130-7483a20dc7a0-slip.webp)

In this example, Slip changes the source window from C–F to D–G while the linked clip keeps its timeline position and duration. [Open the Slip example at full size](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/owner130-7483a20dc7a0-slip.webp?ref=premiereproclub.com).

Choose [Slide](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/edit-projects/trim-clips/perform-slide-edits.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) when the content is right but the whole clip needs to happen earlier or later between its neighbors. Select it, press **U** on either platform, and drag left or right. The selected clip keeps its source In and Out points and its duration. Premiere adjusts the preceding clip's Out point and the following clip's In point to compensate.

Use the documented default keys below for a small slide. Keyboard assignments, including the tool keys above, can be remapped. Check your assignment if a key performs a different action.

- **macOS:** Option+comma slides the selected clip left one frame; Option+period slides it right one frame.
- **Windows:** Alt+comma slides the selected clip left one frame; Alt+period slides it right one frame.

When a trim or slide lengthens an edge, check the unused source frames in the clip being extended. With Slide, that includes the neighbor growing to fill the move. Play across both cuts and inspect those neighboring shots as well as the clip you moved.

![Slide moves a linked shot to the right while the left neighbor lengthens and the right neighbor shortens](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/owner130-a84b2efdbbe7-slide.webp)

Slide moves the shot without changing its chosen frames or duration. The two neighbors absorb the move, keeping the run the same length. [Open the Slide example at full size](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/owner130-a84b2efdbbe7-slide.webp?ref=premiereproclub.com).

These tools change the chosen frames or their placement. If the movement itself needs to run faster or slower, change the clip's speed instead of trying to solve it with a slip.

## Compare the cut in the Program Monitor

Select the Timeline panel or Program Monitor, then choose [Sequence > Trim Edit](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/get-started/keyboard-shortcuts/default-keyboard-shortcuts.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) (Shift+T on macOS or Windows) to enter Trim mode. In the [Program Monitor's two-sided trim view](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/edit-projects/trim-clips/edit-in-trim-mode.html?ref=premiereproclub.com), compare the outgoing and incoming frames before committing to the new cut.

![Trim mode with outgoing and incoming frames above the documented backward, transition and forward controls](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/owner130-d12a812d6a1d-trim-monitor.webp)

Compare the outgoing frame on the left with the incoming frame on the right. Drag across the middle for a rolling edit. [Open Trim mode at full size](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/owner130-d12a812d6a1d-trim-monitor.webp?ref=premiereproclub.com).

Move the pointer across the boundary between the two sides. Adobe describes the cursor changing from **Trim Out** on the left to **Roll** in the center and **Trim In** on the right. Drag at the center for a roll; move toward the relevant side to adjust that edge. Hold Command on macOS or Ctrl on Windows while you drag the outgoing or incoming side to make a regular trim on that side. Check the selected operation before dragging so the cut changes in the way you intended.

The monitor makes a small mismatch in framing or action easier to see. Then check the sound in playback: start a little before the edit, play through it, and listen to the complete word or sound that crosses the cut. When the cut works, press Shift+T again or click anywhere in the timeline to leave Trim mode.

## Check targeting separately from track locks

[Track Targeting](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/edit-projects/intro-to-editing/work-with-clips-on-the-timeline-using-track-targeting.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) controls participating tracks for operations such as navigation, pasting and matching frames. Its controls sit at the left of the timeline. A targeted track isn't protected from editing; inspect Track Lock when protection is the goal, and Sync Lock when deciding which other tracks should participate in a ripple.

In the interview example, check the V1 cut against A1 dialogue first. Then listen to A2 music and watch the V2 title at their intended moments. Make one clean pass through the edited sequence: no gap at the cut, no clipped syllable, and no title or music cue arriving at an unintended time. The [Premiere editing guides](https://premiereproclub.com/tag/editing/) pick up from there with splits and speed changes.
