- Description: Choose when Premiere updates, keep the working app and project copy, and check the cut before the next session. App rollback and project recovery need different steps.

To update Premiere Pro, save your project and close Premiere, then [open Creative Cloud and choose Home > Updates > Update beside Premiere](https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/apps/manage-apps/creative-cloud-apps/update-creative-cloud-apps-manually.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). If it is not listed, use Apps > Manage updates > Check for updates. I'd wait until the current cut is delivered unless a specific fix is needed to finish it: changing versions adds a compatibility question just when the sequence needs to stay predictable.

Adobe [now calls the desktop app Premiere](https://blog.adobe.com/en/publish/2025/11/19/adobe-premiere-adds-smarter-search-faster-edits-seamless-collaboration?ref=premiereproclub.com), formerly Premiere Pro. The steps below cover Windows and macOS; the product label in an older Creative Cloud view may still say Premiere Pro.

## Let the delivery decide when to update

[Adobe recommends updating between major projects](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/get-started/download-and-install/best-practices-for-updating-premiere.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) and controlling auto-updates so an installation does not interrupt the work. For a cut due today, leave the update alone. If the release notes name a fix for the problem blocking delivery, prepare the backups below and try the new version with a project copy.

Read the installed version first. On Windows, use Help > About inside Premiere. On macOS, open the app-name menu beside the Apple menu and choose About. You can also [hover over the app in Creative Cloud to see its installed version](https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/apps/manage-installed-apps/find-creative-cloud-app-version.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). Compare it with the release offered to your account, rather than assuming an update mentioned in a video is still the newest.

If another editor needs to open the project, agree on the version before converting it. A small patch and a new major version carry different project risks, but either change still needs a way back.

## Keep the project and its working setup

Before a major update, work through these checks in order. A saved project copy preserves the edit; the other checks protect the settings and dependencies that make it play correctly.

[![Separate pre-update and working project files linked to the same source media](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/a10-96f1d2701369-owner130-project-copies.webp)](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/a10-96f1d2701369-owner130-project-copies.webp?ref=premiereproclub.com)

Keep the pre-update project copy untouched. New edits belong in the working project opened by the updated app.

[Open the full-size project-copy diagram](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/a10-96f1d2701369-owner130-project-copies.webp?ref=premiereproclub.com)

1. **Save a project copy.** Choose File > Save a Copy. The [default shortcut](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/get-started/keyboard-shortcuts/default-keyboard-shortcuts.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) is Ctrl + Alt + S on Windows or Option + Command + S on macOS. Keep this copy unopened by the new version. Keep the source media intact too; if you need a collected copy, [Project Manager's Collect Files and Copy to New Location](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/organize-media/create-projects/move-project-to-another-computer.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) gathers the selected sequences and their media.
2. **Copy your version's profile folder.** Adobe's [settings-migration instructions give the profile locations](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/troubleshooting/preferences-and-settings-issues/unable-to-migrate-settings-after-updating-premiere.html?ref=premiereproclub.com): `C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Adobe\Premiere Pro\<version>\Profile-<profilename>` on Windows, and `/Users/<username>/Documents/Adobe/Premiere Pro/<version>/Profile-<profilename>` on macOS. Copy the folder to a separate backup location; copying it does not reset your current setup.
3. **Check the plugins used by this cut.** Read each developer's compatibility information for the target Premiere version and operating system. Adobe's major-update advice specifically calls for up-to-date third-party plugins. If an essential plugin has no compatible release, keep the project in its existing app version.
4. **Check the computer.** Read the [target release's requirements](https://premiereproclub.com/premiere-pro-system-requirements/), then open [Help > System Compatibility Report](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/get-started/download-and-install/check-if-your-system-is-compatible-with-premiere.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) for detected driver or component issues. The report offers Fix for the relevant help and Export Report if you need to send details to support.

Auto Save is useful recovery, but keep the deliberate pre-update copy as well. Its rolling history is not an untouched boundary between the two app versions, and [Auto Save backup to Creative Cloud is no longer supported for individual accounts](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/get-started/preferences-and-settings/auto-save-preferences.html?ref=premiereproclub.com).

## Control auto-updates and keep the older app

In Creative Cloud, open Apps > Manage updates, then Enable auto-updates or Manage auto-updates. Adobe's [current auto-update controls](https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/apps/manage-apps/creative-cloud-apps/update-creative-cloud-apps-automatically.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) let you leave the general Auto-update switch on and turn Premiere's individual toggle off. That holds Premiere while letting you choose how other apps update.

Before a major installation, review Premiere's Advanced options while auto-updates are enabled. Keep Import previous settings and preferences selected if you want the existing setup carried over, and clear Remove older versions to retain the previous app. Adobe makes these advanced options available only while auto-updates are on. Then set Premiere's own toggle as intended and select Done. After installation, verify that the older version is still present before relying on it.

[![Advanced options with Import previous settings and preferences selected and Remove older versions cleared](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/a10-b06291a43d4f-v4-retain-version.webp)](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/a10-b06291a43d4f-v4-retain-version.webp?ref=premiereproclub.com)

With Auto-update enabled, clear Remove older versions to retain the earlier app. Keep Import previous settings and preferences selected if you want the existing setup carried over.

[Open the full-size Advanced options controls](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/a10-b06291a43d4f-v4-retain-version.webp?ref=premiereproclub.com)

If the switch is missing or locked on a work or school account, [your organization may control automatic updates](https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/apps/troubleshoot/install-update-issues/auto-updates-is-disabled-or-not-available.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). Ask the administrator to preserve the version needed for the project.

To keep a manual update on hold, leave Update unselected. When Auto-update is off, [Later schedules installation when the app is no longer in use](https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/apps/manage-apps/creative-cloud-apps/schedule-app-updates.html?ref=premiereproclub.com); closing Premiere at the end of the day can let that scheduled update begin. It is not a hold until delivery.

## Install the update for Premiere alone

1. Save your work and close Premiere. Adobe's manual update instructions ask you to close the apps before starting.
2. Open the Creative Cloud desktop app. On Home, select Updates, then Update beside Premiere.
3. If no update appears, use [Apps > Manage updates > Check for updates](https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/apps/manage-apps/creative-cloud-apps/check-for-app-updates.html?ref=premiereproclub.com), then review the Updates list again.
4. Choose the app's own Update action. I'd avoid Update all for this job because changing several applications together makes a later compatibility problem harder to trace.
5. Once installation finishes, check the installed version in About or by hovering over the app in Creative Cloud. If you planned to retain the older app, look for it under Apps > Your apps too.

[![Check for updates control above an individual Premiere Pro row with its Update action](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/a10-ab21101cd904-v3-cc-updates.webp)](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/a10-ab21101cd904-v3-cc-updates.webp?ref=premiereproclub.com)

Refresh the list with Check for updates, then choose Update on the Premiere row.

[Open the full-size update controls](https://storage.ghost.io/c/77/55/77555393-c1bd-4bdb-8b52-1f1199ed8675/content/images/2026/11/a10-ab21101cd904-v3-cc-updates.webp?ref=premiereproclub.com) to read the two actions.

## The app can go back; the edited project may not

Adobe's [project-compatibility guide](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/organize-media/create-projects/backward-compatibility-of-projects.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) says projects are forward and backward compatible within a major release. Its conversion workflow for an earlier major version preserves the original and creates a new project file. Keep the two files separately named, and do the new work in the converted file.

The 25.6.0 exception in the table above is why the broad same-major rule should not replace checking a specific build. Adobe's utility addresses that particular format change; it is not a general downgrader for any newer project.

If the new app does not work for the cut and you have made no new edits, open the untouched pre-update copy in the older app. If you have edited the converted project, the old copy will not contain those changes. Adobe documents XML export and import as a route back, but [File > Export > Final Cut Pro XML transfers only some Premiere features](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/render-and-export/export-files/export-a-project-as-a-final-cut-pro-xml-file.html?ref=premiereproclub.com). Check the FCP Translation Results log and expect to inspect effects, transitions and audio carefully. XML is a recovery route, not a complete native project backup.

To reinstall an available older app, use Apps > Your apps > More actions > Other versions and select Install for that version. The [support and download options depend on the Creative Cloud plan](https://helpx.adobe.com/support/programs/cc-support-policy.html?ref=premiereproclub.com); do not assume every historical installer will remain available. Keeping the working app before an update is safer than planning to find it afterwards.

## If Creative Cloud offers no update

Check the account and target system requirements first. On a managed account, your administrator may control availability. Otherwise refresh the list with Check for updates, make sure Creative Cloud itself is current, and restart it. Adobe's [missing-update steps](https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/apps/troubleshoot/install-update-issues/cant-find-updates-creative-cloud.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) also include signing out and back in to resolve account synchronization problems. These checks come before deleting Creative Cloud files or reinstalling applications.

## Keep Premiere beta separate from the delivery

Premiere beta comes from the Beta apps area of Creative Cloud. Adobe describes it as [a place for testing and feedback](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/whats-new/beta-features.html?ref=premiereproclub.com), so a feature shown there does not establish that it has [shipped in the release app](https://premiereproclub.com/premiere-pro-2026-updates/). Use a project copy for beta work and keep the delivery in its approved release version. If the beta area is unavailable on a work or school account, [the administrator may restrict access](https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/apps/troubleshoot/known-and-fixed-issues/beta-apps-unavailable-creative-cloud-desktop-app.html?ref=premiereproclub.com).

## Check the cut before committing the next session

Open a project copy in the updated app. Play across a cut with dialogue and a title, then check a transition and any essential plugin. Inspect the incoming shot and lip sync. Review the framing and the effect's appearance before playing the whole sequence. Export a short representative section with your normal delivery settings and open that file before committing more work to the converted project.

If a crash points to an effect, [Manage Video Effects in the Effects panel menu](https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/add-video-effects/apply-video-effects/manage-effects-and-plug-ins.html?ref=premiereproclub.com) lets you disable an effect for the next startup. If playback instead shows red Media Offline frames, [relink the missing files](https://premiereproclub.com/media-offline-premiere-pro/) before making another change to the installation.
